Due to recent expansion of EPA regulations regarding discharge of water containing contaminants, owners of boats and marinas have had to heighten their awareness regarding waste water containment.

If caught discharging any contaminated water overboard, even an ounce or less of light oil mixed with bilge water will produce a visible sheen on the ground or on the water. This is identified by the EPA as a reportable discharge, of which large fines are possible including clean-up costs, and even criminal prosecution when flagrant violations are detected.
